Henrik Stenson is a professional golfer from Sweden. He currently plays on the PGA and European Tours. He made history for being the first Swedish major champion when took home the win for the 2016 Open Championship organized at Royal Troon. He clinched a historic double when he won both the FedEx Cup and the Race to Dubai challenge in 2013. He was the first golfer to ever win both tours in the same season.
Even though Stenson is left-handed, he trained to play golf as right-handed. Stenson started playing golf at the age of 12, and by the time he reached 15 years of age, he was already a 5 handicap. He was actively involved in junior and amateur competitions in Sweden. In fact, he even played for the boy’s national team in 1994.
Stenson turned professional in 1999, joined the main European Tour in 2001 and went on to win the Benson & Hedges International Open that same year. He became the first Swede to take home the win for World Golf Championship after defeating Geoff Ogilvy in the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship finals. This win propelled the professional golfer to the top of the European Order of Merit and to position 5 in World Rankings.
The professional golfer failed to make an appearance at the 2016 edition of the U.S. Open at Oakmont due to minor injuries on the neck and knee. He, later on, won the BMW International Open, and making history as the first ever professional golfer to win the event at two different venues; the first being the 2006 GolfClub Munchen Eichenreid, and in 2016 at the Golf Club Gut Larchenhof. He also represented Sweden at the 2016 Olympics where he took home the silver medal.
Henrik Stenson has had a marvelous record playing golf. He has also established an amazing life outside the sport. He is married to Emma Lofgren and they were blessed with a beautiful daughter in 2007 and a bouncing baby boy in 2010.
